Day 2: Companies and 宁夏夜市

For Day 2, we spent the day going to different companies to learn more about the both the politics and business side of Taiwan. We first went to the American Institute of Taiwan, which acts as the de facto embassy between the US and Taiwan.

During the meeting, we got to learn more about not only the relationship between Taiwan and China, but how Taiwan fits into global politics and economy. Their goals for how they want to be represented in the world also appeared during our conversation as I learned that Taiwan wants to stay connected with the rest of world in an important and maintain great connections with the other countries of the world. This is especially interesting since Taiwan is a big manufacturer of computer chips and semiconductors for computers in the technology industry. I knew about this but I never truly connected how important this is for maintaining good relationships with the Western countries. After asking our questions after the presentation, we eventually departed for lunch and the other companies.

After lunch, we met with a couple different companies that mostly talked about the factory work and supply chain importance in America. Two of the companies were owned by non-Taiwanese citizens so it was interesting to see how important people from the West were able to see the significance that Taiwan had from the manufacturing for the world.

After the meeting with all of the companies, we left to go our separare ways for the most part, as a couple of us from the group eventually left with Profesor Chen and Young to go to the 宁夏夜市 and grab some food and drinks from the area. Overall, I believed the day was a success and it was nice to learn more about the importance of Taiwan and our relationship with them.
