Day 7

I can remember as a little kid every once in awhile i would visit my grandparents print shop. The smell of the ink, paper and the machines when walking into the factory was immediately recognizable. Small businesses like this one used to be the back bone of America and even though it is in Taiwan its still nice to see that they still exist.

The process and the machines where very interesting to learn about and see. Many of the machines are advanced enough so that it only really requires one worker to operate. It is interesting to hear from the owner of the factory how the importance of not only having advanced machines and not printing as many text books is because of the constantly decreasing birth rate of Taiwan.

When walking into the office of the factory a small shrine is can be immediately seen. The god at the center of the shrine is tudi or the god of earth. They pray to this god in the office every 2nd day of the month and every 16th day of the month. This is extremely interesting because it comes after they days that family usually pray. They often prepare incense, fruit, or paper money on these days. And at the end of the calendar year which happens to also line up with their fiscal year end they will prepare larger offering and this is when Taiwanese workers usually get the bonuses.
