Taiwan: Day 9 – Lukang & Fongjia Night Market

On our second day in Taichung we visited a large, grand opera house, which boasted really interesting architecture and interesting exhibitions. I honestly think the best part of the opera house was the gift shop, though — there were hundreds of little wooden figurines, a display made entirely out of felt, and many more hand crafted items. After eating a delicious but very spicy lunch, we headed to Lukang — historical town situated on Taiwan’s western coast. Lukang was a very charming town and I really enjoyed my time there. The streets had dozens of shops and I got a bunch of souvenirs and gifts for my friends and I. My favorite part of Lukang had to be the temple, though — I really enjoyed the way it was constructed and it had some beautiful rooms. There was also a gorgeous fountain in the outdoor section of the temple with koi fish and turtles, and I found the environment overall to be very tranquil. After we left Lukang we headed to Fongjia Night Market in Taichung, which was admittedly quite overwhelming — there were mopeds everywhere and little sidewalks, and I found it a bit difficult to navigate the streets. Nevertheless I ate some really good street food (pork skewers) and had a fun time — I was definitely happy to get back to our hotel, though, as it had been quite a long day. Overall I really enjoyed our time at Taichung, and I’m very excited to explore Kaohsiung!
