Day 1 – May 20, 2025

After a long 15-hour flight with no sleep, I arrived in Taipei feeling physically drained but mentally wide awake with anticipation. Despite the jet lag, we wasted no time exploring the rich culture and history Taiwan. From the moment we landed, the city felt alive modern but deeply rooted in tradition, crowded but also surprisingly orderly and efficient. I was so surprised at how clean the subway was compared to New York city which i’m used to. We went to the Taipei 101 observatory deck. Standing at the top of one of the world’s tallest buildings, I was shocked to […]

Pre-Taiwan Goals

Hi my name is Dylan Jones and this will be my first time traveling to Taiwan. I have been learning Chinese (Mandarin) since I was in high school and it has always been one of my life’s goal to go to Taiwan as my first Chinese teacher was Taiwanese and she talked very highly of her country. This semester I have been in Singapore and Australia which has allowed me to experience different cultures and experiences. But I believe Taiwan will be a completely different experience as the countries I have already been to spoke English as their main language. […]

Pre-Taiwan Goals and Fears

As I prepare for the trip to Taiwan, I have certain expectations of how being abroad there will go. My main goals are to really immerse myself in the country and its culture and be able to get a good feel for what Taiwan is like. I want to visit as many new places and try as many new things as I can, and, along with the course, be able to leave Taiwan with much more knowledge about the nation and its culture, politics, economics, religion, and so forth. While I am very excited to explore all these new places, […]

Pre-trip thoughts

My personal goals for this trip are to have the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture by engaging with the local communities, exploring historical sites, and trying traditional Taiwanese cuisine. I hope build connections with both local residents and fellow students on this trip, and grow more confident in navigating unfamiliar environments. I am also excited to learn more about Taiwan’s culture and be able to experience a new culture/society firsthand. One of my main fears is the language barriers that might limit my ability to communicate or fully engage with other people.

Pre-Trip Thoughts – 5.11.25

I’m really excited (and almost equally nervous) to be flying out to Taiwan in a little over a week from today! It’s been wonderful getting to know Prof. Chen, Prof. Young, and all of the others who will be going on this trip, and I’m looking forward to growing closer once we’re there. I’m also very stoked for some of the activities we have lined up on our itinerary, especially the ones where we will get to meet people. My main goals are to make new friends and experience as many things as I can that I would not be […]

Pre-Trip Thoughts

I hope to engage with the culture, language and people and I hope to as much as possible. Having studied Mandarin since high school I hope that this can be a culminating experience not only for the purpose language but also elements culture I have yet to learn. I’m a little concerned for the long flight and hope that there is not too much recovery time for me and my classmates. I’m looking forward to exploring the cities that we will be visiting. I do somewhat fear getting lost but what better way to learn than figuring your way around. […]
