Day 12 – May 31, 2025

Today we visited Fo Guang Shan, one of the major Buddhist organizations in Taiwan. The main message they emphasized was that Buddhism should be accessible to everyone, and that includes making it easier to approach through modern means like comfort, convenience, and clear communication. The presence of stores and amenities around the grounds wasn’t about commercialization but about creating an environment that invites people in without intimidation. They want people to feel welcomed, not overwhelmed.

We walked through the museum, which had multiple exhibits showing how Buddhism has evolved and how Fo Guang Shan presents its teachings to the public. It was well-organized and clearly designed for a wide audience. One of the most unique parts of the day was seeing the One-Stroke Calligraphy exhibit. It’s a specialized technique that involves writing entire characters or phrases in one continuous stroke. It looked simple at first glance but required a lot of control, focus, and precision.

A major highlight was our time speaking with female monastics. We had the opportunity to ask them questions directly. We talked about daily routines, why they chose monastic life, and how they balance Buddhist practice with the challenges of a changing world. Their answers were grounded, thoughtful, and surprisingly practical. One nun talked about the balance between solitude and social responsibility, and how technology plays a role in modern religious life.

Overall, the day helped clarify how Buddhism is being shaped to meet the needs of people today. The emphasis wasn’t on strict tradition but rather accessibility, communication, and making spiritual tools available for modern use. I mostly liked how much women were incorporated into the practice in recent years because in the Museam I read that originally only men were able to join Buddhas disciples which really shows how the religion has changed over time and adapted to changing times coming closer to accepting women as equals.
