Today was a more relaxed day, which I definitely appreciated as the last few days had been quite hectic and filled with activities. Our main activity for the day was a cooking class, where we learned to make zongzi, which are dumplings with sticky rice, pork, squid, egg yolk, mushrooms, boiled peanuts, and a few other ingredients. We cooked the pork belly, added sauce to the rice, ad completed a few other preliminary steps, which were quite easy and a lot of fun to do. The hard part came after – we had to wrap all the ingredients into bamboo leaves, which was quite hard to do. The leaves had to be folded in a specific way and it took me a few tries to get the hang of it; it was also hard to keep the fillings from falling out of the wrap. After folding everything up we had to secure the wraps in some string and then dip them in boiling water. In the mean time we made boba, the process of which was way simpler than expected. We shook up a mixture of black and oolong tea with milk until there was a milky consistency at the bottom of the shaker and a foam at the top, which we poured into a glass cup with tapioca pearls at the bottom. The drink was delicious and honestly some of the best boba I had in Taiwan – it had the perfect sweetness to it and I liked that it wasn’t too milky. Soon enough the zongzi were ready to be eaten, and it was super flavorful and a pleasure to eat, especially with a bit of sweet chile. The experience overall was really enjoyable – our cooking teacher did a great job at guiding us through the process and I found that I really enjoyed cooking, which isn’t something I’d done much previously.
