Day 9

On Day 9, we visited two temples located right next to each other, which were more tourist-heavy spots. I loved the design of these temples because they were more tower-shaped, with one resembling a tiger and the other a dragon. We got to scale both pillars and see some of the surrounding area, featuring giant statues of Buddhist gods and smaller stone statues that lead up to the big statue. We finished the academic part of our day with a visit to a smaller local temple. After our learning objectives were met, the group and I decided to go to […]

Day 8

We left Taichung today, taking another bullet train to go further south into Zuoying. As I spend more time here in Taiwan, I learn more and more. Even though I am so far away from home, I am learning that Taiwan is not abnormal in comparison to the US. Yes, this place is different and has its own culture, but it is not so different that I feel out of place here. I felt this way when we visited an art museum and saw many local people going about their day-to-day lives, enjoying the museum just as I was. A […]

Day 7

Day 7 begins as we leave Taipei and move to Taichung. We got to ride a bullet train there, and I was thoroughly impressed with the efficiency and well-kept bullet trains and their stations. We visited a science expo park, where we learned a great deal about the park’s history and the types of monetary contributions that take place within it. A lot of the learning focused on technology and Taiwan’s contributions to the world, as well as how Taiwanese businesses are able to achieve these numbers. We then visited another temple, which was very large and more significant than […]

Day 6

Day 6 of our trip to Taiwan was a good middle ground in terms of meeting our learning goals. We began our day by visiting a paper printing company owned by Professor Chen’s brother-in-law. It was amusing to see these two interact with each other in a professional setting, and the tour was very informative, so I thoroughly enjoyed this visit. We then went to a temple where people say all your questions about love will be answered truthfully. We got to tour around a bunch of smaller shops where I picked up some souvenirs to bring home. A lot […]

Day 5

Today was our first Saturday in Taiwan, and it started off really well. We toured a university located in Taipei, where some students gave us a guided tour. We had the chance to see art exhibits at two locations on campus, and it was fun bonding with fellow students from Taiwan. However, things took a turn when I realized I had lost my backpack, which contained my journal that I’ve had for about two years. This made me really upset, as it was something so important to me. Thankfully, my new friends from the university worked hard to find where […]

Day 4

On Day 4, we swap back to the business side of our learning objectives in Taiwan. The morning of day 4 was particularly hard for me because I got sick in the morning from something I ate. I powered through as we headed to the annual Taiwan technology expo held yearly in Taipei. This place was cool to see all the latest innovations of modern technology in Taiwan so far. I saw some gaming technology and contributions to the field of AI which were super interesting and engaging. After the tech expo, our group went and did some shrimp fishing. […]
