Taiwan: Day 11 – Kaohsiung Temples & Beach

Our second day in Kaohsiung was more packed with activities. We started the day with visiting a pond surrounded by temples and pagodas, and explored the famous Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. There were large “statues” of a dragon and tiger on the entrances of both buildings, and we entered through their mouths to get in. The pagodas had 7 floors and had really gorgeous interiors and exteriors. There was also a great view of the pond, mountains, and cities outside, and I took dozens of pictures to try to capture everything I saw. We headed to two other temples after […]

Taiwan: Day 10 – First Impressions of Kaohsiung

My first day in Kaohsiung was admittedly not as exciting as some of our other days in Taiwan. We took the high speed rail to the city and then visited the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, which had some really interesting exhibitions. There was one in particular that I really enjoyed — the artist had created dream-like, colorful paintings that displayed undertones of religion and Buddhism. Though I liked the museum I do wish there were more displays, as I was able to see all the exhibits in a rather short amount of time. After the museum we headed to […]

Taiwan: Day 9 – Lukang & Fongjia Night Market

On our second day in Taichung we visited a large, grand opera house, which boasted really interesting architecture and interesting exhibitions. I honestly think the best part of the opera house was the gift shop, though — there were hundreds of little wooden figurines, a display made entirely out of felt, and many more hand crafted items. After eating a delicious but very spicy lunch, we headed to Lukang — historical town situated on Taiwan’s western coast. Lukang was a very charming town and I really enjoyed my time there. The streets had dozens of shops and I got a […]

Taiwan: Day 8 – Hsinchu & Taichung

We woke up bright and early to begin our journey to southern Taiwan on the 27th. Professor Young and Professor Chen very kindly gave us breakfast boxes before we headed to the train station, where we rode for one stop and then transferred to the high speed trail. The ride over to Hsinchu was really gorgeous — after we arrived we got a tour of Hsinchu Science Park, a technology park with highly innovative and progressive engineering. There were titanium joints, precision machineries, concepts of various items (like a moped) and many more high-tech inventions. I’m not very versed in […]

Taiwan: Day 7 – Printing and Dihua Market

We started off day 7 of our Taiwan trip with a visit to Professor Chen’s sister in law’s brother’s printing factory, where we learned about the printing process and how printing production works. It was really interesting to see how something so essential and common to our every day lives works. Large sheets of paper are folded and cut, and the binding part is outsourced to other companies, as dispersing work often proves to be more efficient. I also really enjoyed learning about the way that culture and religion plays into the way that the printing company operates — there […]

Taiwan: Day 6 – National Taiwan University + Exploring Taipei

Day 6 started off with me figuring out how the laundromats in Taipei work, which actually turned out to be relatively simple – I also really liked the fact that it was a completely “self serve” process. A little while later we got on the subway and traveled to National Taiwan University, one of the highest ranked universities in the country. A couple of first year students gave us a tour of the school, some of which happened to also be international relations majors! It’s a less popular major, so it’s always interesting to meet other students who study it. […]
