Day 5, Taipei – Taipei National University of the Arts, Jade Market

Today we went on a tour of the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) campus. We were guided by two students, Daniel and David, who are both theater majors. The first thing I noticed was how great their sense of fashion is! That’s something I’ve been seeing a lot, especially in busy city areas like Ximenting where young adults usually flock to. Though, Daniel and David are art students so it makes sense that they’d have style regardless of being Taiwanese. The grounds of TNUA are so beautiful, much like many other parts of Taiwan. One thing that was […]

Day 4, Taipei – GIGABYTE Technology and COMPUTEX

Today we had a late start to our day. Most of my peers used the free time to explore Taipei but I was still feeling pretty jet lagged so I used the time to sleep in a bit. I did, however, explore the convenience stores to look for breakfast. I got a salmon roe onigiri, two tea eggs, and a coffee. Very yummy! In the afternoon, we got on the coach bus and headed to COMPUTEX Taipei, one of the largest computer and technology expos in the world. Honestly, I’m not big on tech and I would never go out […]

Day 3, Taipei – Longshan Temple, Xingtian Temple, and the National Palace Museum

Today we visited our first couple of temples. In the previous days we’ve walked past a couple of them but we hadn’t gotten a chance to go inside one just yet. From the second we stepped off of the tour bus at Longshan Temple I was mesmerized. The details in the architecture from the gates, to the pillars, to the rooftops were intricate and reflected the rich culture and history of Taiwan. I couldn’t understand all the rituals—lighting incense, bowing, praying—but I felt the significance of them. Despite the bustling of tourists, there was this sense of quiet respect that […]

Day 2, Taipei – AIT, SCM Solutions, and Celinius

Today we started with a visit to the American Institute in Taiwan, where we got to hear from Christopher Koschil, an American diplomat at this de facto embassy. The conversations gave me a whole new perspective on how diplomacy works. Christopher explained what they do a the AIT—basically everything an embassy would do, since the U.S. doesn’t officially recognize Taiwan as a county. He explained the history of U.S.–Taiwan relations and how it’s evolved over time. Taiwan is a major trading partner for the U.S., especially when it comes to semiconductors. Christopher explained that America, amongst many other countries, are […]

Day 1, Taipei – Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Taipei 101, and The Grand Hotel

As soon as we stepped foot off the plane, we were hit with the intense Taiwan heat and humidity in the jetway—a taste of what we were about to experience in our walks through Taipei. We had about one more hour of air conditioning as we went through immigration and baggage claim and made our rounds to the bathroom before we got on our tour bus. I made the unfortunate decision to wear jeans without packing a change of shorts in my carry-on bag, so I savored the cool air it while I had it.  At arrivals, we met with […]

Day 0.5, New York – Flying In

This past weekend has been hectic to say the least. I got home from Bucknell on the night of the 14th and had about 4 days (3 full days) to unpack my things from Bucknell, see some friends from home, and pack for Taiwan. I’m not the best at packing for a trip, let alone within 3 days for a 3 week trip halfway across the globe, but I did it! Getting to JFK was also quite stressful. For our 1:25AM, we had to be at the airport by 9:30PM for check in. I live in the metro area of […]
