Day 11 in Taiwan

Today, day 11 of being in Taiwan, was filled with culture and religion as we visited many temples in Kaohsiung. The first place we visited was not a temple in itself, but an extension of a nearby temple called Chiji (or Tzu Chi) that Professor Young, Kyla, and I had privilege of visiting later on in the day. The extension of Chiji temple that we first walked through was the Dragon and Tiger pagodas. These were beautiful 7-story towers that connected to each other and had a zig-zag bridge connecting them to the shore. There was a giant dragon and […]

Day 10 in Taiwan

We started today off with yet another hotel breakfast followed by a starbucks trip and then packed up all of our belongings to head to Kaohsiung. We rode on the high speed rail once again, however it hasn’t moved at full speed yet. When we go back to Taipei, we will be traveling at close to 180 mph!! After getting off the high speed rail, we had lunch basically at the station. I got dumplings and shrimp fried rice.  Afterwards, we went to the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Kyla and I started on the top floor working our way down […]

Day 9 in Taiwan

Kyla and I started our day off with a quick hotel breakfast, trying almost everything they served, and then we walked to Starbucks to get a caffeine pick-me-up drink. Our first group activity for the day was a visit to the National Taichung Theater, an opera house. One thing that I immediately noticed was that the building was built with a curved architecture, and I believe it only contained non-geometrical lines. I thought that this was super cool since the architecture of the building itself resembled an opera as it displayed a kind of “architecture that can be listened to”. […]

Day 8 in Taiwan

Today was a busy travel day. We woke up early to ride on the High Speed Rail to Hsinchu in which we got to see Hsinchu Science Park. Our first stop when we arrived was to the Science Park Exploration Museum in which we got to see an array of new inventions that were being made at the park, one of which was a Scooter powered by Hydrogen gas. I thought that this was a cool idea to promote sustainability, however given that the scooter could only travel 80 km and its top speed was 15 km/hr, it doesn’t seem […]

Day 7 in Taiwan

Today we hit one full week of being in Taiwan and it still feels so surreal to me. I feel like it has been ages since we all met up in the JFK airport, and we have done and seen so much since then. Our day started out with a visit to Professor Chen’s brother-in-law’s printing company, Hong Jaan, in which we had the opportunity to see the manufacturing side of businesses. It was cool to hear about how the products that they print have shifted over the past years as we have developed more and more technology. This shift […]

Day 6 in Taiwan

Today we started the day with a class session in which we meditated, reflected on our experiences in Taiwan so far, and showed what we learned by crafting two essays. I found the hardest part of the assignment to be describing the role that religion plays in economics and the extent to which it has an influence in the business realm. Although this was challenging for me, I found the activity to be helpful in the sense that I really had to think about and draw connections between business, religion, and what we have learned so far about the history […]
