Day 15: Cooking and Making a Presentation

Today was a very uneventful day sadly as the only required event was to go to a Taiwanese cooking class for lunch. For our class, we made zongzi, an old Taiwanese dish that based on boiling rice, pork and some Taiwanese style assortments with some banana leaves wrapped all around them. The meal was good but was extremely difficult for me as I am not a delicate chef After the cooking class, we were left to our own devices. I was going to go do something special for today, but after learning about the presentations on Thursday, I decided to […]

Day 14: Company Visits and 九分

For today, we got to have another company visit with a company known for their filmmaking and movie industry, Studio76. This company was truly interesting as they talked about how the company was created and how they decide to make the films. The way he described his thinking let me know that he was truly knowledgeable about the industry he is in and that it came from his experience in it. For example. he talked about how he chooses the genre of the movies he creates based on what is popular for the regions the company is popular in, like […]

Day 13: Going Back to Taipei

We went back to Taipei early in the morning with the high speed rail. It still confuses me how we don’t have these types of train in America considering the much more convenience of them for commuters. Anyways, once we got back to Taipei, we started exploring more temples, with one of them being dedicated to the 77th grandson of Confucious. One of the statues outside of the temple depicted the phrase “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” with monkeys, which is apparently derived from Confucious. This phrase is very popular in the west so its interesting […]

Day 12: Last Day at Kaohsiung and Dragon Boat Festival

This would be the last full day we were going to spend in Koahsiung as we were gonna be heading back to Taipei for other excursions. Today’s excursion would be one of the biggest highlights of this trip I believe as we took a long bus ride to Foguangshan, which is considered to be the largest monastery in Southern Taiwan. You can see this monastery from miles away as their Big Buddha expands almost into the clouds it seems. Entering the monastery was very different compared to the other places we went to in Kaohsiung, as there were many stores […]

Day 11: Dragon and Tiger Temples and More Strolling

For this day, we decided to visit some temples in Kaohsiung. The first temple we visted had to separate entrances and exits designed to fit with the mythology of the temple. For Chinese folk religion, we must enter through the dragon and exit through the tiger, which this temple exhibited with its large animals having open mouths for entrances and exits. I made an incense blessing at this temple and followed the descriptions of its paintings inside the beasts. Its fascinating the dedication and commitment these temples exhibit towards exhibiting their beliefs, especially with the amount of uniqueness each temple […]

Day 16: Final Post and the Dharma Drum Mountain

Today is the last journal post for the trip as tomorrow will be for presentations and enjoying our last night out in Taiwan. It has been a wonderful trip and experience, and it has been an enlightening to be out here with all these new friends I have made. I would like to thank the professors for this chance of a lifetime, and I feel that I have fulfilled a long time goal of mine being here. For our last excursion, we decided to go to the Dharma Drum Mountain to learn more about meditation and the monk lifestyle. We […]
