Day 12 in Taiwan

Day 12 began with our second lecture session of the trip. Once again we meditated for 5 minutes at the beginning of the session, which I thought was a helpful practice session for when we meditated later at Foguangshan. I, personally, find it really hard to sit still, even just for 5 minutes, but I am beginning to understand and appreciate the art of mediation more as we spend more time doing it and learning about it. This class session was more educational than the last one. We had the opportunity to hear from both professors about both religion and […]

Day Thirteen – Taipei

We traveled to Taipei in the morning and packed the early afternoon with visits before meeting the bus at the hotel. Since the Confucius Temple in Kaohsiung was under construction, we got to visit a Confucius temple in Taipei instead. This temple is dedicated to the 77th grandson of Confucius. Like the Japanese monarchy, the descdants of Confucius have been tracked in an unbroken lineage and are still well-regarded today. They have been recognized by each dynasty even through changeovers. Confucius is not considered a deity, and neither is his lineage. Rather, he was such a respected teacher during his […]

Day 14: Studio 76 visit , Jiu fen and lantern lighting

We started the day out with a company visit to a movie studio company called Studio 76. This company helps produce movies and Tv shows in various stages of production from just the script or from the ground up. All of the media produced by this company is focused on the East Asian market. There where many nuances to this because certain countries like main land China and others have heavy censorship and the company would need to take certain actions to align with this. Not only would they do this but they would also localize somethings like the titles […]

Day 13: Return to Taipei, Temple Visits and the 228 memorial Museum

We started the day out with a bullet train ride back to Taipei as it was the end of our time in Gaoxiong. Because we took the express train we got to experience the full speed of the bullet train. After we arrived back in Taipei we made our way to a Confucius temple. An interesting part of this temple is that there is no center god or being but rather the teachings of Confucius where spread throughout the temple. The next temple that we visited was a Daoist temple that was very well preserved. This one was pretty much […]

Taiwan: Day 14 – Studio 76 & Jioufen

We started off day 14 with a visit to Studio 76, an entertainment tech company that creates, adapts and peruses original story IPs on global, multi media platforms, which I was pretty excited for as I really love watching movies and was excited to learn about the production process and how that looks in Taiwan. To be honest, it quickly became clear that the production’s main objective was to generate revenue rather than make quality movies, as the majority of the movies the company was producing were extremely digestible and unoriginal, and the owner himself said he broke into the […]

6/3

It is our last week in Taipei, and we have a range of activities that we aim to get done before we leave. Our group activity for today was attending a cooking class at CookInn. We made zhongZi, which is a rice ball with different meats and seafood inside. The hardest part about making these was wrapping the rice in bamboo leaves. It was very challenging to wrap the leaf around itself and get it to stay in place while covering all the rice and fillings. We also made bubble tea and were served meatball soup. Overall it was a […]
