Day 12: Lecture, hotpot lunch, Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum

We Started the day out with class time where we learned some more religion specific things about Buddhism in preparation for the day ahead to Fo Guang Shan. We also went into deeper discussion and writing into the relationship between business and religion. We read a few related articles about the economic practices of Buddhist monks/organizations as well as possible Buddhist economics that could help address current economic problems and inequality. We also went over the scale, mix and make up of religious practices throughout Taiwan. This was pretty interesting because the mix and make up has been stable over […]

Day 11: Dragon and Tiger pagodas, Guan Yu statue, Mazu Temple, and the beach

We started our day out with visits to a couple different temples and attractions around the Zuoying district of Gaoxiong. The first was the Dragon and Tiger pagodas as pictured below. No matter what temple we go to you seem to learn something new every time. Here there was zig-zag bridge and apparently the reason for this is that it is believed that ghosts only can walk in straight lines so the zig-zag stops ghosts from entering the temple. The entrance and exist of the pagodas was the same as any temple. Enter through the dragon and exit through the […]

Day 5, Taipei – Taipei National University of the Arts, Jade Market

Today we went on a tour of the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) campus. We were guided by two students, Daniel and David, who are both theater majors. The first thing I noticed was how great their sense of fashion is! That’s something I’ve been seeing a lot, especially in busy city areas like Ximenting where young adults usually flock to. Though, Daniel and David are art students so it makes sense that they’d have style regardless of being Taiwanese. The grounds of TNUA are so beautiful, much like many other parts of Taiwan. One thing that was […]

Taiwan Day twelve (5/31)

Today (5/31) started out with class where we learned a little more about Buddhism. I thought this lecture was informative and something that we had done earlier because I gained such a deeper understanding for the religion. It was interesting and eye opening to learn about the wheels and the different realms. It is always interesting to me to see how different religions are practiced or what their main roots are because I didn’t grow up in a religious background. Gaining an understanding for what people believe in, helps me to gain a more forgiving outlook. Once we finished class […]

Day 8

We left Taichung today, taking another bullet train to go further south into Zuoying. As I spend more time here in Taiwan, I learn more and more. Even though I am so far away from home, I am learning that Taiwan is not abnormal in comparison to the US. Yes, this place is different and has its own culture, but it is not so different that I feel out of place here. I felt this way when we visited an art museum and saw many local people going about their day-to-day lives, enjoying the museum just as I was. A […]

Day 4, Taipei – GIGABYTE Technology and COMPUTEX

Today we had a late start to our day. Most of my peers used the free time to explore Taipei but I was still feeling pretty jet lagged so I used the time to sleep in a bit. I did, however, explore the convenience stores to look for breakfast. I got a salmon roe onigiri, two tea eggs, and a coffee. Very yummy! In the afternoon, we got on the coach bus and headed to COMPUTEX Taipei, one of the largest computer and technology expos in the world. Honestly, I’m not big on tech and I would never go out […]
