5/29

The main activity this Thursday was visiting the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Although I am not very familiar with high-quality art, I could appreciate many pieces of artwork in the museum. I really enjoyed the top floor of the museum, where one artist had a collection of oil paintings. These paintings used bright colors to create an almost glowing effect. I have also included one of my favorite paintings below, which was a flower that appears to look 3D. I am shocked at how realistic it looks. After my first walkthrough of the museum, I missed a very interesting […]

Taiwan Day ten (5/29)

Today (5/29) we started the day by heading to the HSR in order to travel to Kaohsiung. The train made the travels quick, only about an hour. Once we arrived in Kaohsiung we headed to the Art Museum where we saw a lot of different artwork. These are a couple of my favorite pieces that we saw in the museum, I felt like these are very different then things I have seen in previous museums. I especially liked the luminated backgrounds because I felt like the backgrounds made the artwork more meaningful. Also I thought the knitted flamingo was interesting […]

Day 9: Taizhong opera house, Historical District, and a Very old Temple

This opera house was pretty interesting because throughout the basic structure of the building the building there is no straight lines which made for a cave like interior which I guess would be good for opera singing and what not. I was a little disappointed that we could not actually take a look into where the performance take place but the many of the assessable areas where still cool to see. After the opera house we made our way over to a historical part of Taizhong where a lot of buildings where preserved. Here we got to sample some local […]

Day 10: Travel to Kaohsiung/Fine art museum/Kaohsiung American School/Boat ride/Liuhe Night Market

We started the day out with another bullet train ride to make our way to Kaohsiung at the southern end of the island. It seems that the more south you go the less populated and dense the cities get. The streets are wider and there is a lot more space over all. The art museum was pretty cool although I only got to walk through 2 of the floors before I was invited by professor Chen to attend a recruitment like trip for one of the local high schools. It is always rewarding to talk about my place of education. […]

Day 9 in Taiwan

Kyla and I started our day off with a quick hotel breakfast, trying almost everything they served, and then we walked to Starbucks to get a caffeine pick-me-up drink. Our first group activity for the day was a visit to the National Taichung Theater, an opera house. One thing that I immediately noticed was that the building was built with a curved architecture, and I believe it only contained non-geometrical lines. I thought that this was super cool since the architecture of the building itself resembled an opera as it displayed a kind of “architecture that can be listened to”. […]

Day Nine – Taichung & Lukang

We got a lot done despite the later wake up. Malli and I had time to visit the Starbucks a couple blocks down from our hotel, as we wanted to check out the different menu options. I got the hojicha tea latte as it is one of my favorite teas: definitely 10/10. Our first stop with the class was the National Taichung Theater, which is a feat of architecture designed by Toyo Ito. We showed up early and were told we could wait at the outdoor amphitheater, as they were expecting some people of import (I didn’t know who they […]
