Setting the Tone: Day 1 {5/20}

…Ok, it’s official. I’m officially in Taiwan!!!!! 🇹🇼 I’m so excited for this opportunity and everything that’s ahead. Speaking of what’s ahead, right after a 16-hour flight, we got down to business. Once we boarded the bus, our very chic and talented tour guide Peter gave us a quick rundown on how the trip would go. He also hit us with a brief but super interesting history lesson about Taiwan. It was cool to hear about the mix of cultures here, but the way Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwan’s own unique flavor. After that, we headed to our hotel to drop […]

Taiwan Day six (5/25)

Today (5/25), we started the day by having a class that involved reflecting what we have learned so far. I found hearing everyone’s thoughts insightful and interesting because everyone had different things that spoke to them. Additionally, things that stuck out to some people were sometimes things I didn’t think about myself. After our meeting, some of us headed out to the train in order to find something to eat. We took the train a couple stops before getting off and wandering around. We found this restaurant and while part of the menu was in English, the younger women who […]

Taiwan: Day 5 – Taipei National University of the Arts & Yongkang Market

On day 5 of our trip we got to interact with local Taiwanese students after going to the Taipei National University of the Arts, which was located in a hilly area in Beitou District. Being that I do art myself I really enjoyed our time at the school, and it was really amazing seeing all the different artwork that the students there had created. There was a ton of variation in media and art style, and it was pretty clear that the students had a lot of space to explore different ways of making art. The campus itself was also […]

Day 5

Today was our first Saturday in Taiwan, and it started off really well. We toured a university located in Taipei, where some students gave us a guided tour. We had the chance to see art exhibits at two locations on campus, and it was fun bonding with fellow students from Taiwan. However, things took a turn when I realized I had lost my backpack, which contained my journal that I’ve had for about two years. This made me really upset, as it was something so important to me. Thankfully, my new friends from the university worked hard to find where […]

Day Five – Taipei

Today we visited Taipei National University of the Arts and were guided by a current student, Daniel, and a past student, David. At last, it has begun to rain more consistently. I didn’t think to check the weather and bring my new umbrella, but luckily there are many ways to procure one. There is a rack at some MRT stations with old, lost umbrellas that you can borrow and return, and there are also rentable umbrellas that ultimately cost about NTD$20 a day. We were shown around the campus as well as a few of the students’ art exhbits. The […]

Day 4 in Taiwan

Day 4 began at a glorious 6am in the morning when Kyla and I woke up. Us, along with Hanna and Mikey unsuccessfully attempted to rent U-bikes to go on a morning bike ride and settled for a 3 mile walk along the river. We saw a bunch of crabs, fish, turtles, and birds, as well as a beautiful view of the city skyline and river. We met a man who was walking one of his 1100 5k’s for love and he posted a nice video of us on instagram!  We next headed to a small restaurant to get some […]
