Day 3

Long Shan si (龍山寺) , xin tian gong (行天宫), The palace museum Long Shan Si: Upon arrival the first thing that you notice is the great level of detail in everything. This is interesting as the level of was very different in xin tian gong. The temple had a central incense burn which is the center to most temples. Immediately when entering the temple on the right or the tiger side there is an area to buy offering of snacks and such. The temple was made up of 3 main building. The bell tower used to signify the opening of […]

Day 1: Early in Taiwan and Temples

I arrived a day early for this trip as I have been in Southeast Asia and Australia since January for a different abroad experience. The different time zones of the US and Singapore caused the mishap in flights, so I got to explore Taiwan for an entire day by myself. Sadly, I could not explore as much as I want. I did not get to sleep on my 1am flight so I had no energy when I arrived at the hotel. After taking a nap in my hotel room and waking up at 5pm, I explored the local area and […]

Day 0.5, New York – Flying In

This past weekend has been hectic to say the least. I got home from Bucknell on the night of the 14th and had about 4 days (3 full days) to unpack my things from Bucknell, see some friends from home, and pack for Taiwan. I’m not the best at packing for a trip, let alone within 3 days for a 3 week trip halfway across the globe, but I did it! Getting to JFK was also quite stressful. For our 1:25AM, we had to be at the airport by 9:30PM for check in. I live in the metro area of […]

Taiwan: Day 3 – Temples and the National Palace Museum

On day 3 of our trip to Taiwan we visited Lungshan Temple, a Buddhist and Taoist temple a short drive away from our hotel. I was really excited for this visit as I had seen dozens of pictures of East Asian temples before and they always looked beautifully designed and constructed. Lungshan did not disappoint – there was a waterfall and koi fish pond lining either sides of the area, and we walked through a gorgeous archway as we entered the square. There was a bell tower and drum tower, and the buildings themselves were were really intricately made. The […]

Day 2 in Taiwan

Today started out very different from yesterday. We had the opportunity to visit two very different companies, and hear more about the economy in Taiwan, as well as the economic relationship between the US and Taiwan.  Our first stop was to AIT, American Institute in Taiwan, in which Christian Koschil gave an insightful overview on many aspects of the Taiwanese economy, as well as, explained what the AIT does. I found it interesting that the AIT serves as a de facto embassy of the US since Taiwan is not officially recognized as a country. I also enjoyed learning about how […]

5/22

Today we visited two temples. The first, Lungshan temple, is a Buddhist and Taoist temple located in Taipei. I learned many traditional aspects of Buddhist and Taoist worship, including that in temples, you always enter at the side with the dragon, and leave at the side with the tiger. People who visit the temple often bring offerings, including flowers, incense, and vegetarian foods. This is because non-vegetarian foods are indicative of a blood sacrifice, something unpleasant to both the offeror and the deceased. I also noticed how the offerings at Lungshan were always placed on a red plate before being […]
