Day 14 in Taiwan

Day 14 started off with a visit to studio 76, a film and media company that specializes in entertainment and smart media. One thing that I found significant was that the major markets for the developed films are in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Mainland China. I feel like it makes sense that more films are sold to surrounding countries than places in Europe or the US. I also thought it was super interesting how strict censorship policies are present in China that make it so that certain scenes are required to be removed from the film. One example was […]

四月

Prompt 1: This program pushed me to move beyond observation and into participation. At the beginning, I was primarily focused on seeing Taiwan as a cultural experience something to learn about from the outside. But over time, my perspective evolved. I started to realize how interconnected identity, history, and daily life are here. Talking with monastics at Fo Guang Shan, for example, made me rethink what it means to live with purpose. Visiting the 2/28 exhibit challenged me to think more critically about political memory and resilience. And even learning to make boba from scratch taught me how much tradition […]

Day 14

On Day 14, we take our final religious tour of an institution that doubles as a university and a monastery. We got to sit in and practice various staples of meditation, such as walking meditation and outdoor meditation. Due to the bad weather, we didn’t get to experience the entire university, but I still enjoyed the time we spent focusing on meditation and relaxation. We then moved on to my favorite part of our visit, tea time. We had an instructor who would make us tea and explain the process of making tea in groups of 4; I loved the […]

Learning, Growing, and Connecting – A Reflection on My Experience in Taiwan – Day 17 {6/5}

Personal Growth: I’ve learned a lot about myself, especially my ability to connect with others in unfamiliar settings. I tend to be shy and quiet at first when I’m around people I don’t know or in a new environment. Because of that, it’s harder for me to open up. But I’ve realized that once I get adjusted and start communicating with even 2–3 people, it becomes easier for me to step out, get to know the rest of the group, and have fun. That small step builds confidence, and I now recognize it as part of my process when navigating […]

Day 13

Day 13 was more of a solo adventure for me, but we started with a group cooking course. We were making rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. I don’t cook, so I had my work cut out for me, but I still had a great time. Our instructor was very friendly and even made us boba from scratch. It was a good way to start the day. We had free time for the rest of the day, so I took the opportunity to visit the Taipei Zoo. All the animals in the zoo seemed to be well cared for, and […]
