Day 1

Day 1 in Taiwan was a very packed and jam-packed day for the whole group. right after leaving the airport we did a very brief tour of Taipei and I really enjoyed seeing the city and how much there is to do here. I love the atmosphere of being in a urban environment along with the great public transport. I hope to be able to indulge in all the opportunities I come across while I am here in Taiwan. I went out late at night and the night markets were very nice, and I felt safe while being outside. I […]

Day 2 – May 21, 2025

Today was another full and enriching day in Taipei. We started the morning with a simple but satisfying breakfast at the hotel fresh fruit, congee, and steamed buns before heading out for our first visit of the day: the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). As the unofficial U.S. embassy here, AIT plays a critical role in U.S.-Taiwan relations. It was fascinating to hear from one of the commercial officers about how the Institute facilitates trade, diplomacy, and business between the two regions despite the lack of formal diplomatic recognition. I hadn’t realized how delicate and complex Taiwan’s international status truly […]

My Bucknell-in-Taiwan Daily Reflection

6/5/2025 Day 18 – TBA 6/4/2025 Day 17 – Meditation in Many Forms: A Quiet Return to the Self Today at Dharma Drum Mountain, we followed the guidance and explored a variety of meditation practices in different settings, inside and outside the classroom, slowly walking in the rain, facing the mountain, watching nature, listening to birds chirp, and even experimenting with different mouth shapes to create distinct sounds, humming, and more. At the end of this one-day-long visit, we drank tea as a form of Zen practice. The message was clear: meditation can take many forms. Sometimes, even actions like […]

Day 1 – May 20, 2025

After a long 15-hour flight with no sleep, I arrived in Taipei feeling physically drained but mentally wide awake with anticipation. Despite the jet lag, we wasted no time exploring the rich culture and history Taiwan. From the moment we landed, the city felt alive modern but deeply rooted in tradition, crowded but also surprisingly orderly and efficient. I was so surprised at how clean the subway was compared to New York city which i’m used to. We went to the Taipei 101 observatory deck. Standing at the top of one of the world’s tallest buildings, I was shocked to […]

Pre-Taiwan Goals

Hi my name is Dylan Jones and this will be my first time traveling to Taiwan. I have been learning Chinese (Mandarin) since I was in high school and it has always been one of my life’s goal to go to Taiwan as my first Chinese teacher was Taiwanese and she talked very highly of her country. This semester I have been in Singapore and Australia which has allowed me to experience different cultures and experiences. But I believe Taiwan will be a completely different experience as the countries I have already been to spoke English as their main language. […]

Pre-Taiwan Goals and Fears

As I prepare for the trip to Taiwan, I have certain expectations of how being abroad there will go. My main goals are to really immerse myself in the country and its culture and be able to get a good feel for what Taiwan is like. I want to visit as many new places and try as many new things as I can, and, along with the course, be able to leave Taiwan with much more knowledge about the nation and its culture, politics, economics, religion, and so forth. While I am very excited to explore all these new places, […]
