Final Project

Personal Growth: Going into the Program ,I’m sure just like many of my classmates, I did not know a lot about Taiwan. Whether the multiple religions in practice or the scale of the countries manufacturing capability. I knew that Taiwan produces microchips but I did not know that the United States would be looking to Taiwan to re-industrialize as highlighted by our visit to AIT. It also seems that Taiwan is the place to be with companies like SCMS being the middle men for US based companies and Taiwan’s factories. Companies like Gigabyte and entire portions of cities are dedicated […]

Day 17 – Reflecting on the Past 17 Days

Pre-Taiwan Perceptions and Growth Before coming to Taiwan, I had a very surface-level idea of what the country is like. I think this is true for a lot of people when they’re thinking about a foreign country they’ve never been to before because it’s really easy to define a place by its tourist attractions or what shows up first on Google when you search “places to visit in *blank* country”. But, spending time in the local neighborhoods, eating local food, learning traditions, and hearing from people who actually live and work here made me realize how much more there is beneath […]

Final Presentation!

The first time I ever came to Taiwan, I was 6 years old and remember nothing but the Jadeite Cabbage and that I liked it here. Starting my second trip to Taiwan with Bucknell, I knew some basic history, some things about the economy, some things about the culture, and some things about the religion. After this trip, my first positive impression hasn’t faded, but I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for “Taiwan de te se” (台湾的特色) or what makes Taiwan unique.  Being in Taiwan and meeting so many different people has really made clear to me the multitude of paths […]

Day 12

Day 12 was one of my favorite days of our trip so far. We began by traveling to this mountain to visit some historic sites in a small town that was once very popular due to its gold mine located on the mountain. When the gold ran out, however, the people left the city, making it a ghost town. Now reinhabited, we must explore this massive market, which is part of the town bursting at the seams with people and tourism. It was cool to see tourists and locals alike going about their day-to-day lives while discovering many interesting things […]

Day 11

On Day 11, we make our way back to Taipei for the last time, as our time in Taiwan comes to a close. We start our day by visiting another temple, but this time it is a Confucius temple. I enjoyed the simplicity of this temple, but I missed the enormous statues and monuments of different deities that were absent here. We then made our way to a museum dedicated to the history of Taiwan’s struggles on the 2/28 incident. This is a time when the Japanese colonization of the island ended, and a lot of people from mainland China […]
