5/24

Today we visited the Taiwan Art school and met with Daniel, a current theater student, and David, a recent graduate. We started the day with a tour, where we saw the different buildings for each field of study. We then went into two different art museums on campus. The first was a student art gallery, where there were two stories of student’s abstract art on display. The second was another museum that was more focused on traditional looking paintings. What I found really interesting about both of the museums was that none of the artwork was behind glass or roped […]

5/23

Today we visited a technology convention where we went on a tour of the Gigabyte Technology company led by Liam Quinn. We got to see new technology from Gigabyte that submerges computer centers in water to combat overheating. I am not very technologically inclined, so it was interesting to hear about recent advancements in the industry, and still surprises me what engineers have been able to innovate and the capacity that these new learning language models have.  Later in the day, we visited a shrimp fishing farm. This was a significant experience for me because I have never been fishing […]

Day 5: University visit, the Jade market, and the Raohe night market

View From the Top of Taipei National University of the Arts A university student and alum gave as a tour of the campus despite the rain. We got to get a an idea of the lay out of the campus and also got to see some of the art work created by the students. I have never actually been on a college campus that is fully dedicated to the arts but it was interesting to see pieces of work throughout the entire campus and not contained with in a building or two. With the students that we met and with […]

Day 2: Companies and 宁夏夜市

For Day 2, we spent the day going to different companies to learn more about the both the politics and business side of Taiwan. We first went to the American Institute of Taiwan, which acts as the de facto embassy between the US and Taiwan. During the meeting, we got to learn more about not only the relationship between Taiwan and China, but how Taiwan fits into global politics and economy. Their goals for how they want to be represented in the world also appeared during our conversation as I learned that Taiwan wants to stay connected with the rest […]

Day Four – Taipei

Day Four was mostly free for us, with our first and only true engagement starting at 1, so Hanna, Malli, Mikey and I took a walk along the river after waking up at around 6 AM. It was meant to be a bike ride, but we were having many, many technical difficulties. It was a lovely walk anyhow, and we ended up talking to this one man who was walking 5500 kilometers over the course of a 1.5 years (5k a day) as part of a deal he made with his friend. See more on his Instagram page, which you […]

Taiwan: Day 4 – Tech Convention + Exploring Ximen

After waking up at around 5 AM, still slightly jet lagged, I ate breakfast and then set out to explore our area, as I had plans to visit a few shops and buy a couple necessary items – a laundry bag, tote, umbrella, etc. To my dismay I discovered that most places don’t actually open till around 11, so my options were more limited. Still, I was able to visit a couple shops and start buying some gifts/souvenirs to bring back for my friends. I also tried Xing Fu Tang’s famous brown sugar boba, which was tasty but little too […]
