Reflections on Faith and Fortune – Where Religion Meets Business in Taiwan – Day 6 {5/25}

Today was a day of reflection. A day to discuss and consolidate my learnings, both religious and economic. Especially, a time to reflect on the way in which religion and business interact and interweave. On that note, I came to realize that religion here in Taiwan is very much present in the spaces where people do business. Many local businesses have small altars set up, often featuring a god, such as the God of Business, or other deities they worship. They do this to bring prosperity to their business. The process usually involves praying or burning offerings, such as spirit […]

Day 9: National Taichung Theater and Fengchia Night Market

We explored the National Taichung Theater late in the morning. We couldn’t enter the building when we first got there so we had to stay outside and do something else until we could. I took two laps around the theater looking at the surroundings and listening to music as that is one of my favorite things to do. I eventually stopped and went to the outdoors stadium thingy as everyone else was there doing a talent show. April is apparently double-jointed which honestly adds up; Mikey can do a walking handstand which in hindsight seems obvious as he’s great at […]

Day 8: Traveling to Hsinchu & Taichung

We woke up very early for the high speed rail heading to Taichung. This was definitely the earliest I have ever woken up during the trip besides the first day. We got some breakfast boxes and we rode the high speed rail to Taichung. I relearned that Jennifer is getting a minor in Geography randomly enough and we eventually got to Taichung in 30 minutes. We never got to see what it looked like outside of the train as we were almost always underground but it felt fast. After the train ride, we went to Hsinchu Science Park and learned […]

Art, Animation, and a Touch of Nostalgia – A Special Visit to TNNUA – Day 5 {5/24}

Guess who… me! Today I just want to share one of the experiences that happened today. We had the opportunity to meet up with a few students from Taipei National University of the Arts and got the chance to tour around their campus. During the tour, we were able to view some of the art exhibits that showcased existing works by the students, and let me tell you, it was phenomenal. Not to mention, one of the pieces was a painting animation, and I got to see both the individual drawing frames that made up the animation as well as […]

Day 7: Printing and Night Markets with Jennifer and Hanna

We went to a small printing company to learn more about the manufacturing process here in Taiwan. This company had a relatively small employee count as most of their manufacturing process was done by machines. They showed off some of their work and how it was done through automation. I actually knew some of the works they were printing as popular manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Black Butler and Call of the Night). Such a small factory had major outlets wanting to print from them in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and some personal orders from the US. They even manufactured a […]

Day 6: Reflection, National Taiwan University, and Speaking Chinese at a Massage Parlor

This Sunday morning, we had class at 9am for reflection of our first few days of Taiwan and what we picked up on at these temples and areas we went to. I was a little late to class as both Mikey and I did not wake up on time for it. We were still able to participate and share our thoughts on what we learned and thought from our Taiwan experience. I especially reflected on Day 2 and 4 as my interest in technology appeared again this morning. Afterwards, we wrote these reflections onto paper to get a rawer idea […]
