A Calming Day of Temples, Traditions, and Treasures: Day 3 {5/22}

I’m back again and this time I’m coming with a more calming tone. Today, we visited two different temples that represent two of the religions here in Taiwan. The first, Longshan Temple, follows the Buddhist religion. During our time there, I learned that people first pray to the heavens before turning toward the main temple to pray to the main god, Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. Fun Fact, Guanyin is also worshipped in India, but portrayed as a male figure there, thus referred to as Guanyin, the God of Mercy. Besides this, I learned about the offerings people bring when […]

Day 2, Taipei – AIT, SCM Solutions, and Celinius

Today we started with a visit to the American Institute in Taiwan, where we got to hear from Christopher Koschil, an American diplomat at this de facto embassy. The conversations gave me a whole new perspective on how diplomacy works. Christopher explained what they do a the AIT—basically everything an embassy would do, since the U.S. doesn’t officially recognize Taiwan as a county. He explained the history of U.S.–Taiwan relations and how it’s evolved over time. Taiwan is a major trading partner for the U.S., especially when it comes to semiconductors. Christopher explained that America, amongst many other countries, are […]

Taiwan: Day 10 – First Impressions of Kaohsiung

My first day in Kaohsiung was admittedly not as exciting as some of our other days in Taiwan. We took the high speed rail to the city and then visited the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, which had some really interesting exhibitions. There was one in particular that I really enjoyed — the artist had created dream-like, colorful paintings that displayed undertones of religion and Buddhism. Though I liked the museum I do wish there were more displays, as I was able to see all the exhibits in a rather short amount of time. After the museum we headed to […]

5/29

The main activity this Thursday was visiting the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Although I am not very familiar with high-quality art, I could appreciate many pieces of artwork in the museum. I really enjoyed the top floor of the museum, where one artist had a collection of oil paintings. These paintings used bright colors to create an almost glowing effect. I have also included one of my favorite paintings below, which was a flower that appears to look 3D. I am shocked at how realistic it looks. After my first walkthrough of the museum, I missed a very interesting […]

Taiwan Day ten (5/29)

Today (5/29) we started the day by heading to the HSR in order to travel to Kaohsiung. The train made the travels quick, only about an hour. Once we arrived in Kaohsiung we headed to the Art Museum where we saw a lot of different artwork. These are a couple of my favorite pieces that we saw in the museum, I felt like these are very different then things I have seen in previous museums. I especially liked the luminated backgrounds because I felt like the backgrounds made the artwork more meaningful. Also I thought the knitted flamingo was interesting […]

Day 9: Taizhong opera house, Historical District, and a Very old Temple

This opera house was pretty interesting because throughout the basic structure of the building the building there is no straight lines which made for a cave like interior which I guess would be good for opera singing and what not. I was a little disappointed that we could not actually take a look into where the performance take place but the many of the assessable areas where still cool to see. After the opera house we made our way over to a historical part of Taizhong where a lot of buildings where preserved. Here we got to sample some local […]
