Day Seven – Taipei

I was highly anticipating both of the visits we had scheduled for today. First, we visited a small printing company called Hong Jaan, which is owned by Prof. Chen’s brother in law. I was interested for this reason, but I also desired to see the manufacturing side of the supply chain after having visited other companies that were more on the management and shipment side of business. It was also a chance to see more concrete examples of how religion influences business, as it would be more evident in a company with seven total employees. Indeed, if you look in […]

Day 7

I can remember as a little kid every once in awhile i would visit my grandparents print shop. The smell of the ink, paper and the machines when walking into the factory was immediately recognizable. Small businesses like this one used to be the back bone of America and even though it is in Taiwan its still nice to see that they still exist. The process and the machines where very interesting to learn about and see. Many of the machines are advanced enough so that it only really requires one worker to operate. It is interesting to hear from […]

Day 5 in Taiwan

Today we began the day with a trip to the Taipei University of the Arts after a quick breakfast at the hotel. The MRT and bus ride was quite long, but definitely worth it to be able to see one of the Universities in Taiwan, and meet some locals that were our age. Upon arriving at the university, we were greeted by a recent graduate and a current student who showed us around the campus. They brought us into two art buildings that contained art exhibits that displayed work done by students at the school. I enjoyed learning about the […]

Taiwan Day seven (5/26)

Today (5/26) we started our day by heading to a printing press. I found this visit to be very interesting first for furthering the development of my own knowledge about this but secondly focusing in on the business and religion aspect. I found it interesting and different that the Earth/Real Estate God was in the office for good luck, in the other businesses. It was also interesting to me that these Gods were prayed to on different days when compared to other Gods that the locals would pray to. I think this is particularly interesting to me because I did […]

5/26

Today we visited Professor Chen’s brother in-laws printing company, Hong Jaan Printing Co. This was a particularly insightful experience because we clearly saw the connection between business and religion. One of the first things Professor Young pointed out upon arriving was the God Shelf. On the shelf, there were different types of incense as well as a photo of the god who is often called “earth god” or “real estate god.” This god is believed to bring wealth to businesses. The owner explained how on the 2nd and 16th of every month, they prepare offerings including fruit, spiritual money, and […]

Taiwan: Day 6 – National Taiwan University + Exploring Taipei

Day 6 started off with me figuring out how the laundromats in Taipei work, which actually turned out to be relatively simple – I also really liked the fact that it was a completely “self serve” process. A little while later we got on the subway and traveled to National Taiwan University, one of the highest ranked universities in the country. A couple of first year students gave us a tour of the school, some of which happened to also be international relations majors! It’s a less popular major, so it’s always interesting to meet other students who study it. […]
