Day 6: National Taiwan University tour

After our class lecture and reflecting on the now week we have been in Taiwan we made our way to National Taiwan University. This happens to be the place that one of our leading professors, professor Chen, had graduated from. We where given a great tour by a couple of first year political science students. The tour was informative and I was able to have some small talk with them in mandarin as we walked along. We got to walk down the famous street with rows upon rows of palm trees. This was clearly a popular spot for pictures. A […]

5/27

Our day on Tuesday began with a train ride from Taipei to Hsinchu. Once we arrived in Hsinchu, we went to HSP, the Hsinchu Science Park, which is the equivalent to America’s Silicon Valley. We first went on a guided tour, where we learned about some of the most unique inventions that have come out of HSP.  One of the pieces of technology I found most interesting was the motorcycle that ran on hydrogen gas. I think this is a great alternative to methane gas, which releases harmful greenhouse gases to the environment and heavily contributes to global warming. However, […]

Taiwan Day eight (5/27)

Today (5/28) we started the morning off early in order to get to the high speed train in time. Although, it was good to start our day off early, I found myself exhausted all day. Riding the high speed train was cool because it was shaped differently than any train I have been on and it moved super fast. I noticed that the front of the train was trianglar which must have helped the train get up to speed. After we rode the train for 30 minutes, we got off and hoped back onto our bus and headed for science […]

Taiwan: Day 8 – Hsinchu & Taichung

We woke up bright and early to begin our journey to southern Taiwan on the 27th. Professor Young and Professor Chen very kindly gave us breakfast boxes before we headed to the train station, where we rode for one stop and then transferred to the high speed trail. The ride over to Hsinchu was really gorgeous — after we arrived we got a tour of Hsinchu Science Park, a technology park with highly innovative and progressive engineering. There were titanium joints, precision machineries, concepts of various items (like a moped) and many more high-tech inventions. I’m not very versed in […]

Taiwan: Day 7 – Printing and Dihua Market

We started off day 7 of our Taiwan trip with a visit to Professor Chen’s sister in law’s brother’s printing factory, where we learned about the printing process and how printing production works. It was really interesting to see how something so essential and common to our every day lives works. Large sheets of paper are folded and cut, and the binding part is outsourced to other companies, as dispersing work often proves to be more efficient. I also really enjoyed learning about the way that culture and religion plays into the way that the printing company operates — there […]

Day 6 in Taiwan

Today we started the day with a class session in which we meditated, reflected on our experiences in Taiwan so far, and showed what we learned by crafting two essays. I found the hardest part of the assignment to be describing the role that religion plays in economics and the extent to which it has an influence in the business realm. Although this was challenging for me, I found the activity to be helpful in the sense that I really had to think about and draw connections between business, religion, and what we have learned so far about the history […]
